T: So what did you do this weekend?

S: I played Xbox most of the weekend and then I watched the new horror movie out.

T: Well, did you do your homework?

S: I really don’t see the point in spending so much time on something that’s not going to be useful to me in the future.

T: Wait, what?

The illogic here is brilliant. You can effectively win any argument by employing this tactic.

A: I believe the Bible teaches p.

B: I disagree, I think the Bible actually teaches q.

A: Why are you getting so defensive? Maybe you’re just feeling guilty because you’re wrong.

B: Wait, what?

I know some of you might think I’m making these up, but I’ve honestly observed each of these. Here’s a new one I saw recently on Facebook:

A: I believe [insert statement here] is true.

B: Okay, can you explain why?

A: Why are you attacking me?

B: Wait, what?

Here’s another Calvinism one:

A: I don’t want to be a calvinist or arminian. I don’t like labels so I’ll just be a Biblicist.

B: Well, what kind of church to you go to?

A: We’re an independent, fundamental, Baptist church that is premillenial and dispensational.

B: Wait, what?

Here’s another Wait, What? that happened to me recently in a discussion about tithing:

A: Abraham tithed regularly because God had instructed him to do so.

B: Can you show me where it says that in the Bible?

A: No, you have to show me where he didn’t.

B: Wait, what?

This is the first in a series of blog posts about discussions I’ve been a part of that produce a whiplash inducing, “Wait, what?” You would be surprised how common these occurences are. Here’s the first interchange:

A: When I read the Bible, I see God holding man accountable for his sins.

B: Yeah, me too.

A: And I don’t think God forces anyone to repent against their will.

B: Of course not.

A: And I think Christ’s death had benefits for every man.

B. Oh, absolutely.

A: So, you’re not a Calvinist either, huh?

B: Wait, what?
